Alexander’s Restaurant is just five minutes slow walk from Sale Metrolink station, which is very convenient if you like to have a drink (as we do). Alternatively there is free car parking on the premises.

It has been a while since we have eaten here and I noticed from their advert in the Handbook that they have a new chef, so we thought that a return visit was appropriate.

It was a quiet Tuesday night and most of the other diners were residents of the hotel.

The comfortable, large bar area situated upstairs is a nice spot in which to have a drink whilst contemplating this interesting menu.

We ordered a jug of iced water and a bottle of Pinot Grigio for the table downstairs.

For a starter my companion ordered chicken liver pâté with farmhouse chutney. I ordered Black Pudding with blackcurrant drizzle and poached egg.

For main course I had braised lamb Henry, a house favourite, whilst my friend ordered poached salmon with hollandaise sauce, again with a poached egg on top. (Are poached eggs in at the moment?)

When we had finished our drinks we were taken to a nice table downstairs in the restaurant. The dining room is tastefully decorated. Wine and iced water were waiting for us on the table.

My black pudding was quite delicious, although the size of the portion would have gone some way towards becoming a main course. My companion’s chicken liver pâté was equally delicious.

The braised lamb was served on the bone in a beautiful sauce. It was falling off the bone and served with mint mash, both tasty and clever.

My friend’s salmon was perfectly cooked and had a wonderful bouquet. These were served with side dishes of fresh vegetables.

I was unable to finish the lamb and my friend struggled, but finished his salmon, so pudding was not an option. We took the remainder of our wine upstairs, sprawled in the comfy club armchairs and ordered coffee.

This was an excellent meal, the food as good as we remember it. Our bill was £60 on the early diners offer and included all of our drinks and wine. This is excellent value.

The Early Bird is served until 7.00 pm and offers terrific value.

Will we return?

Oh yes, this is on the favourites list.

Our Verdict

Atmosphere 8/10
Service 9/10
Food 9/10
